Comprehensive cancer care

A vital tool for the prevention and diagnosis of cervical cancer and other diseases

It is essential that individuals have HPV testing performed at reliable health centers and by trained physicians. If an HPV test is not performed correctly or its results are not interpreted properly, there may be a risk of false negatives or false positives, which in turn may delay treatment and cause unnecessary concern to the patient. We invite you to rely on the expertise of Panama Cancer Clinic's specialists for accurate results!

This test can be used on its own (primary HPV test) or at the same time as the Pap test (co-test).

It is recommended that women begin HPV testing at 21 years of age, continuing with periodic testing every 3 to 5 years.

What is an HPV test?

The HPV test is a medical test performed to detect the existence of the Human Papilloma Virus in the body. This test is performed through a DNA detection test of the virus in a sample of cells taken directly from the genital area.

The HPV test is one of the most important tools for the prevention and early diagnosis of cervical cancer and other diseases related to this infection, as early results can prevent the development of precancerous or cancerous lesions.

Who should be tested for HPV?

It is recommended that women be tested for HPV, in order to detect traces of the human papillomavirus that can cause cervical cancer or other cancers associated with the disease.

Advantages of HPV testing

The main advantage of the HPV test is the early identification of human papillomavirus strains. Additionally, it is a rapid test that is much less invasive than other tests used in cancer screening.

Procedure for an HPV test

The HPV test is a simple procedure performed in the doctor's office. First, you lie on your back on the examination table with your legs apart and your feet resting in the stirrups.

The physician then carefully inserts a lubricated speculum into the vagina to open it and gain access to the cervix.

Office HPV test

Once there is a clear visualization of the cervix, a brush or spatula is used to gently scrape cells from the surface of the cervix. Sometimes this cell sample is taken after the Pap test. The cell sample is placed in a special bottle and sent to the laboratory for analysis; when the speculum is removed, the procedure is completed.

Preparation for the appointment

To prepare for an HPV test, it is recommended to stop sexual intercourse, douching, tampon use, medications, vaginal creams or gels for at least 48 hours before the test. It is also advisable to wear comfortable clothing and talk to your doctor about any concerns or questions you may have about the procedure.
