How To Protect Your Skin From Sun Damage And Prevent Skin Cancer

Category: General / By: Panama Cancer Clinic

Sun exposure is one of the leading causes of skin cancer, a disease that affects millions of people worldwide. Fortunately, skin cancer is one of the most preventable types of cancer with proper precautions. Skin cancer is a disease that develops when skin cells grow abnormally, usually due to excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun. Protecting your skin not only helps prevent cancer, but also prevents premature aging and other skin problems related to sun exposure.

Tips to protect yourself from sun damage

  1. Use sunscreen: Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 50. Be sure to apply generously to all exposed areas of skin, even on cloudy days. Re-apply every two hours, or more frequently if you are swimming or sweating.
  2. Dress appropriately: Wear protective clothing such as long-sleeved shirts, long pants and wide-brimmed hats to protect your skin from the sun. Opt for tightly woven fabrics and dark colors, which offer better protection against UV rays.
  3. Seek shade: Whenever possible, seek shade, especially during peak sun hours, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Use umbrellas, awnings or trees to protect you from direct sun.
  4. Wear sunglasses: Protect your eyes and the delicate skin around them by wearing sunglasses that block 100% of UVA and UVB rays. Look for glasses with certified UV protection.
  5. Avoid tanning beds: Tanning beds emit UV rays that can cause skin damage and increase the risk of skin cancer. Opt for safe alternatives such as self-tanners if you want a tan.
  6. Perform regular skin self-exams: Examine your skin regularly for any suspicious changes, such as new moles, spots that change shape or color, or lesions that do not heal. Consult a dermatologist if you find anything unusual.

Risk Factors for Skin Cancer

Además de la exposición solar, varios factores pueden aumentar el riesgo de desarrollar cáncer de piel:

  • Family history: Having a family history of skin cancer increases the risk.
  • Fair skin: People with fair skin, light eyes and blond or red hair are at higher risk of sun damage and skin cancer.
  • Many Freckles or Moles: Having many moles, especially if they are atypical, can increase the risk.
  • Previous sunburns: Intense sunburns, especially during childhood, can increase the risk of skin cancer later in life.
