What is a Pap smear?

The Pap smear, also known as a Pap smear, is a test performed on women who have already begun their sexual life, to detect abnormal cells in the cervix that could develop into cancer.

Who should have a Pap test?

Pap smears are generally recommended for all sexually active women over 21 years of age. It is important to repeat this test every three years until the age of 65; although in some cases, the physician may suggest performing this test more frequently depending on the medical history and other individual risk factors of each patient.

Advantages of the Papanicolaou test

Among the advantages of having this exam done periodically are the following:

  • Detect abnormal cells in the cervix before they evolve into cancer.
  • It is a simple and quick test that is performed in the same gynecological office.
  • It is a very effective tool for cervical cancer prevention.
  • It helps physicians detect any cervical problems at an early stage, allowing for timely and effective treatment.

Papanicolaou test procedure

The Pap test itself is a simple Pap smear, in which a vaginal speculum is carefully inserted into the patient to take a sample of cells from the cervix with a spatula or brush.

This sample is then sent to a laboratory for pathological analysis.
